Lesson For A Child

I thought I would seize the moment.

Two of my grandchildren (age 6 and 9) were with my son and me on a morning fishing trip.  I had brought a few chocolate chip cookies along for a snack.  It was so cold we would check the fishing poles and then go back to the truck to get warm again.  Being confined to the back seat, the kids just couldn’t be quiet.  It was a little like having two monkeys in the back seat. I tried to use the cookies as “bait” to encourage them to behave, to little avail.

About mid-morning, it was cookie time.  I thought I would use it as an object lesson.  “These cookies are like God’s grace'” I began.  “You don’t deserve it, but you get it because God loves you so much.  You don’t deserve this cookie, but you are going to get it because I love you.”

Both of them gladly accepted my lesson… and the cookie.

After they had eaten their cookie, I asked the 6 year old if she understood how the cookie was like God’s grace.  “No,” she replied, “If it was like Gods grace you would have given us MORE”.

I’m not sure who was teaching who!
