A TALE OF TWO SENATORS

While in the Nation’s capitol yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the offices of Senator Tim Johnson and Senator John Thune.  Bob Fischer, Dale Bartscher and I met with the staff of both South Dakota senators to discuss the upcoming vote on the Defense Authorization Bill.

At Senator Johnson’s office we were ushered into a little room with two rather nervous young aides to be placated.  It was painfully obvious that Senator Johnson is not with us on this issue.  The aides assured us that Senator Johnson “always likes to hear from his constituents.”   Yeah, right!!!!!!  He was busy, so he could not speak with us.

Senator John Thune’s staff was very pleasant, respectful and professional.  We knew he was not going to be in his office, but his staff welcomed and engaged us.  Let’s just say the difference was like night and day.

For those who do not yet know what is at stake in this bill, let me give you a quick overview.  The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding homosexuals in the military will be rescinded by the Defense Authorization Bill.  This policy has served our Nation well for 17 years.  Its removal has been met with resistance from the military, but the Obama administration is intent on rushing this through without hearing from them and Senator Johnson seems to be in agreement.  The bill also provides for taxpayer funded abortions on military bases.  No objection from Senator Johnson here either!!!

Senator Thune seems to be against approval of this bill.

If you would like to express your opinion to Senator Johnson before the vote on Tuesday of next week, his phone number is 202-224-5842.
