60 Vote Senate Rule Needs To Go

The time has come.

The United States Senate has held the 60 vote rule as sacred for too long.

If an issue as important as confirming a new Supreme Court Justice only takes a simple majority, it would seem reasonable that nothing else should be held to a “60 vote standard”.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell could end the government shutdown easily by eliminating this self-imposed Senate rule.  American security and border protection should be more important than this Senate rule.

The truth of the matter is that when (if) the Democrats regain control of the Senate, they will likely throw out the 60 vote rule if they want to advance an issue that is important to their agenda.  Republicans are only kidding themselves if they don’t know that. Preservation of the 60 vote rule, in the minds of some Senators, maintains some kind of Dignity and Decorum.   News Flash…  Dignity and Decorum have left the building a long time ago.  The Senate needs to put aside their air of self importance and get on with the important business of securing our borders.

The Senate should get down to business.

I like the Tom Harkin plan (former Iowa Senator). First, a filibuster stops ALL other Senate business until it’s dealt with — so that really raises the stakes. It used to be that way, then the Senate rules were changed to allow other bills to go thru on another track during a filibuster. That drags it out. Next, one Senator can object and require 60 votes — for 48 hours. After 72 hours it takes just 55 to over-ride. After 100 hours (pick a number), back to a simple majority. I think Rs will rue the day they changed the current 60 vote requirement once Ds control the Senate and the White House. I also think there is zero chance McConnell will change the current rule.
