Bevo (Longhorn Steer) Wins Match With Uga

The Sugar Bowl had some unexpected excitement.

The Longhorn Steer, Bevo, who is the gentle mascot for the Texas Longhorn football team was “introduced” to the Georgia mascot, Uga, a bulldog.  The result was not what the handlers anticipated.

BUT… before you draw conclusions about the temperament of Texas Longhorn Cattle, you should know a few things.  First, they are not people.  They are animals with strong protective instincts.  The handlers should have taken that into consideration before they arranged this meeting.

Texas Longhorn Cattle have a naturally gentle disposition.  Many of ours come to us in the pasture, looking for a scratch behind the ears or a piece of cattle cake.  Still, I am always mindful that they are big animals with large horns.  It is not a good idea to think they are giant teddy bears.

Our Longhorns have been raised around the family dog(s).  They will sometimes just ignore them around the corrals. Some of our fellow Longhorn enthusiasts bring their cattle dogs when the visit.  That has never been a problem.  If a dog happens into the pasture, it is a different story.  I like that.  I have watched as my entire herd chased a coyote completely across the pasture.  They are very good mothers.  One of my longhorn friends says he frequently finds dead coyotes in his Longhorn pasture during calving season.  That is much better than dead calves.

If you come to see our Longhorns, leave your lap dog at home.

p.s.  The Texas Longhorns won the game.
