Politics, Personalities and Policies

Is the conversation being blinded by hate?

Are the facts swept under the carpet in political discussions?

Probably.

It would be helpful if we could start with the recognition that there are no “perfect” politicians.  Neither will there be.  All of humanity is imperfect.  There are NONE righteous.  No, not one.  Now that we have settled that, how can we… how should we… judge someone in a public office?

Personality?  We all like doing business with people we like.  Some people are not quick to endear themselves to us, either by what they say or some of their personal behavior(s).  Some people have an ability to be “likable” even though they say one thing and do another.

A rational approach might be to look at the facts.  What are the POLICIES enacted by the politician in question?  What are they actually DOING with the office entrusted to them?

Using that methodology has caused me to change my mind about some notable politicians.  I have withdrawn my support for some I previously supported and now support some I had not.  None of them have risen to the level of perfection, personally or politically.  I’m not looking for perfection.

Policy guides my political preferences.  What are the principles guiding the actions of the politician?  Do they line up with mine?  I am a list-maker.  As I evaluate, for instance, our President, these are some of the issues on my list:

Has he been supportive of Israel?  Yes.

Are his policies supportive of my Christian faith?  Yes.

Does he believe in policies that support protecting unborn children?  Yes.

Do I agree with his efforts to protect our border?  Yes.

Is his performance in trade agreements with other countries good for America?  Yes.

Do I agree with the tax cuts he signed?  Yes.

Have his business-friendly policies and reduction of regulations been helpful to the economy?  Yes.

Is his “America First” platform the right approach in trade and foreign relations?  Yes.

It wouldn’t be difficult to continue with this list, but the idea is that for my personal evaluation of the President, I am looking at his performance on issues that are important to me.

Is he perfect?  No.

Do I like everything he says or does?  No.

Do I agree with him on everything?  No.

So, if you ask why I support President Donald Trump, the answer is easy.

He wins on the policy merits.
