Poor Bastards!
Those were the words of an optimistic soldier in the heat of battle, included in President Trump’s 4th of July remarks. It was my favorite line of the day. Another American hero had a similar attitude in a seemingly unwinnable fight,
“they’re on our left, they’re on our right, they’re in front of us, they’re behind us…they can’t get away this time”
– Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, USMC. This came when the Marines were cut off behind enemy lines and the Army had written
the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22 enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the process.
Seeing victory when everything around you is screaming defeat… it’s an attitude I seek to achieve in my personal life challenges.
The forces of evil never tire. They do not sleep. Their mission to steal, kill and destroy is ever-present on their minds. These agents of wickedness come in human form, but our help “commeth from the Lord”. The unseen armies fighting for us should give us the ability to speak victory in the face of defeat. The Old Testament history written in 2 Kings 16 tells of such a battle:
“a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. 15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
You are not alone. The struggles you face which threaten you are win-able. “Only believe.” Those are the words of Jesus. Our responsibility is to believe.
God will handle the battles.
