This could happen to you.
It’s a true story, from South Dakota.
A respected surgeon and his wife (we’ll call them Dr. Mark and Melanie to protect them, since Dr. Mark is still in prison and challenging his conviction) were leaving their office after a day of treating patients. At about 5 PM on that pleasant September day, four black SUVs filled with federal agents wearing flak jackets pulled into their parking lot. Dr. Mark was handcuffed, arrested and hauled off to jail where he was forced to spend the night. The time of day ensured that neither Dr. Mark nor Melanie would be able to contact their lawyer, and the only phone in the jail was a direct dial to the Public Defender’s Office. Their nightmare had begun.
What makes this story compelling is the how the actions of the IRS and their enforcement team coincided with the Doctor’s outspoken opposition to government control of health care. Was the timing “coincidental”?
Dr. Mark spoke out against HillaryCare during the Clinton Presidency. The IRS launched an investigation against him. After HillaryCare was defeated, the investigation was ended.
When socialized medicine was re-introduced by Barack Obama in 2009, Dr. Mark again traveled around the country speaking for medical freedom of choice and advocating for patient rights. Coincidentally, the IRS again took an interest in Dr. Mark’s financial affairs. This time, the government had different plans for Dr. Mark that would cost him a felony conviction, Federal prison and the loss of his license to practice medicine. With the IRS, you are GUILTY until and unless you can PROVE yourself innocent. Proving your innocence does not necessarily mean just presenting factual evidence. In our system of justice, it means that even after you present factual evidence, you must out-lawyer the IRS and their taxpayer funded team of prosecutors. They have stacked the deck in their favor.
It is strikingly similar to the story of Howell W. Woltz, as told in his book “Justice Denied”. Woltz provides a unique and interesting perspective on “justice” in America. Woltz was held in prison for several years… and NEVER convicted of ANY crime.
Targeting political adversaries through unjust prosecution and prosecutorial over-reach are practices many South Dakotans are familiar with. One of the most egregious is the targeting of another South Dakota Doctor who dared to speak out… Annette Bosworth.
