Senator John McCain is a war hero.  For that, he deserves our respect.

That is about where my respect for this Senator ends.

He has a track record of compromise on issues of great importance to conservatives.  His recent display of disdain for Senator Rand Paul only scratches the surface.  He appeared with one of the most liberal men in America, Senator Chuck Schumer, to suggest that Senator Cruz and Paul are not being “reasonable” by preparing to filibuster on gun legislation.

McCain asserts that the purpose of the Senate (in his words… one of the world’s greatest deliberative bodies) is to “debate and vote”.  He immediately recanted his assertion about the great deliberative body, but I would assert it’s what he really believes.  What he doesn’t understand is that the purpose has to be, first, to protect freedom in America.  When freedom is threatened, true statesmen are not willing to “settle” for debate and a vote.  They insist on doing what is “right”, regardless if they are in the minority.

When asked if he would support background checks, he said “It depends….”.  That is his way of saying “yes”.  Some people, like the commentator in this video think it is “real nice” for two senior Senators to appear together in such a calm and reasonable manner.  I don’t think it’s so nice to see a Republican Senator so willing to compromise our freedom.

In the past, McCain has aligned himself with the left on many issues.  Kennedy and Feinstein to name a couple.

He helped usher in the “Age of Obama” by losing the Presidential election with his less than conservative positions.  Now he wants to help us reason with the left to add further restrictions on gun owners.

McCain’s time on the battlefield may have served our nation well, but his time in the Senate seems to pale by comparison.
