Politicians Are Like Teenagers

We love our children even when they misbehave.

If we allow them to continue, however, we have failed in our role as a parent.

It is our responsibility as parents to hold them accountable and impose consequences for bad behavior.  If we make excuses for them, we simply reinforce the wrong actions.  When we don’t require good behavior we enable our teenagers to stay on a bad path and cause damage to themselves and others.  Sometimes one bad choice can follow them for a lifetime.

Political leaders are like teenagers.  It’s unfortunate that Democrats and Republicans alike tend to make excuses for their representatives rather than hold them accountable.

Yesterday, I spoke with a friend about South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard’s support for Common Core.  I asked him if he was giving the Governor a pass on this issue.  His response should alarm conservatives because it is typical of Republicans who choose to turn a blind eye to bad behavior, “He has probably just gotten some bad advise from the Secretary of Education.”

That’s like saying my teenager isn’t responsible because “it was his friends idea”.

In this case, the comment by my friend presents some interesting questions.

Who appointed the Secretary of Education?  The Governor.

Is someone other than the Governor responsible for his policies and actions?

Should we simply turn a blind eye because, in the words of one State Legislator, the Governor is the “Supreme Being” in our state?

The scripture admonishes us to “train up a child in the way he should go”.  Maybe we need to apply the same principle to our political leaders instead of making excuses for them.
