How God Speaks

There are some people that when they speak you cannot help but listen.

By this I don’t mean those who control us because of their position or some other method that is superficial but rather I speak of those who have captured our hearts by their actions and speech. For me that person(s) is our Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). When God speaks there is power that can be seen and felt by all of us uplifting us in ways that no one else ever could or will.

We first see this power of God manifested in creation (Jeremiah 51:15). Each day I truly see the magnificence of God in any and all which is natural around me however it displays itself.

I also believe God speaks through events occurring in various nations including our own (Psalm 66:7). If we as a nation abandon Him there will I believe be a price to pay. It is why individually and as a nation we need to humble ourselves before Him in prayer (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Most importantly God speaks to us through the birth of Christ (Luke 1:35), the power shown in Christ’s miracles (Luke 11:20) and the power seen in His resurrection (2 Corinthians 13:4) to a place of exultation (Ephesians 1:19-20). Prior to the time of Christ on earth and to an extent after His ascension we heard God’s voice directly and indirectly in dreams, stories, historical events, prophecies, prophets and proverbs. Now the culmination for all time is found in the life of Christ who is greater than all these combined.

Ephesians 1:19 also shows us that the power and voice of God is evident in regeneration where a person is ‘born again’ to the point of taking on a new life style. After regeneration God is present in us 24/7 as we grow in His image (sanctification-Philippians 2:13) all of which leads to our individual resurrection (1 Corinthians 6:14).

All of this is an example of the fact that God has, is now and always will be speaking to each of us. All we need to do is keep our eyes open to see His truth and ears open to hear His truth. Doing this we will understand HOW GOD SPEAKS.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: The power of God speaking is seen through His precious promises fulfilled.

DEVOTIONAL VERSE FOR TODAY: Hebrews 1:1 “How God speaks”.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Lord keep my eyes and ears on You.

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:

  1. Who in this life do you look forward to hearing more from?
  2. What do you imagine God would tell us today looking at our lives and our world?
  3. Do methods by which God spoke in Old Testament times still apply today?
  4. How does God speak to you today?
