The Perils Of Social Media

No, everything you see on social media isn’t true.

Image result for hiding behind anonymity

The anonymity allowed on many blog sites allows people with evil intentions to spew slander with impunity.  I believe there is something very wrong with allowing that to happen.  If you aren’t bold enough to attach your (real) name to an accusation or comment there is probably a reason.  And its probably not an honorable one.

This cloak of darkness provides an environment which promotes misinformation, deceit and slander.

It isn’t likely to change anytime soon.  In the meantime, I will personally continue to include my name on things that I post or comments I make.  One benefit I enjoy from that practice is accountability.  When  I write something that is incorrect or unclear, I can be challenged.  That allows for healthy interaction that can clear up misunderstandings and set the record straight.

Honorable people can disagree.  Good people can be wrong.  Sometimes, settling those issues and resolving differences is better accomplished somewhere other than social media.  When people identify themselves as they comment on social media, it allows the option to communicate one on one.  I like that option.

Social media would be well served to eliminate anonymity.
